Statement From The Students' Union

The Students’ Union condemns the act of targeted gendered violence that occurred in a Philosophy 202 - Gender Issues class at the University of Waterloo yesterday. We stand in solidarity with the UW campus community during this traumatic episode, wish a quick recovery to those injured, and acknowledge that many Laurier students may also be feeling unsafe in this moment.

We believe this episode is an escalation of violent rhetoric targeting anti-racism initiatives and the Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ community that has increasingly interrupted local school board meetings. This bigotry and misogyny must be loudly called out.

As more information emerges the Students’ Union will work with our university partners to review safety measures on campus, including our emergency response notification system.
