Opt-Out

Opt-Out Process

The Undergraduate Student Health & Dental Plans are mandatory for all Full & Part-Time students. Students may opt-out if they have proof of alternative extended health & dental coverage or may remain enrolled and combine benefits from both plans.

Click Here for a Visual Guide on how to Opt-Out of your Undergraduate Health & Dental Plan.

All students choosing to opt out must do so through the Student VIP website by the deadline of September 23, 2022. The Health and Dental plan fees are billed to your student account one time per year only, depending on whether you begin your studies in Fall or Winter Term.

Please visit studentvip.ca to review the benefits prior to opting out. In many situations, it will be financially beneficial for you to remain on the plan and coordinate benefits with another plan you may already have.

Students will be reassessed and charged a fee for the plans on a yearly basis. This means you will need to provide proof of alternative coverage and opt-out each year you are a student (including co-op work terms). Alternatively, if you opt out this year, you are still eligible for the plans in subsequent years.

Once you opt out, you are not eligible under any circumstance to opt back in during the current policy year of September 1 to August 31 (this includes a parent experiencing a loss of employment and benefits).

When opting out online you are required to register for an account and provide the following details:

  • MyLaurier email address

  • Student ID number

  • First and last name

  • Opting out of: health, dental or both

  • Name of the insurance company providing your benefits

  • Name of the plan sponsor (employer name or privately purchased)

  • Policy/group number

  • ID/certificate number

Confirmation of successful opt-out request will be reflected on LORIS, Student Services Tab, View Student Invoice, Account Summary by Term. Please be reminded that changes are not reflected on the student invoice.

Please allow 3-5 business days for this change to be reflected on your account summary; should you not see a change after 5 business days, please email undergradhdp@wlu.ca and include your Student ID #.

If You Are Having Issues Opting Out

If this is your first time opting out, you need to make sure you register for an account using your @mylaurier.ca email and a password you create, on the Student VIP website, www.studentvip.ca.

If you intend to opt out again next fall, please write this information down.

If you have previously done so, and are within the opt-out process, it should highlight in yellow where your error is occurring but if not, we generally find these three things can happen:

  • Students sometimes get errors if they do not enter their whole @mylaurier.ca email address in the personal information section.

  • Further down in the process at the My Laurier Login section, you would only use the first 8 characters of your email, for example, abcd1234 as your login and then the password you check your @mylaurier.ca email with.

  • If you are still having difficulty and you know all of the above is correct, please contact WLU IT at support@mylaurier.ca or 519-884-0710 ext. 2222 to see if they can re-set the @mylaurier.ca password for you and give it another try.

As a last resort, if you are still experiencing difficulties, you can also try the opt-out in a different web browser.
